Illinois driver to serve more than a decade for fatal DUI crash

A drunk driving charge can result in serious criminal penalties, especially if the defendant caused an accident that resulted in the injury or death of another person. One Illinois driver is facing more than a decade behind bars because of a fatal DUI crash that took place in 2019. He was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison, and he will also have to pay more than $12,000 in restitution.

Steep consequences

The driver faced steep consequences for the collision that left three people dead. He was found to be intoxicated at the time of the crash, and he pleaded guilty last year to aggravated DUI. This is a felony offense, and it carried the potential for up to 28 years in prison. Because the accident killed multiple people, he was sentenced to serve 15 years.

The defendant must serve at least 85% of his sentence. It is not clear how much time he has already served while his case progressed, but it is likely this time will apply toward his sentence. He has the right to seek the most beneficial outcome to his situation, including early release after serving his mandatory sentence.

Serious defense required

A fatal DUI will result in serious criminal charges in Illinois. While avoiding a conviction in this type of situation may not be possible, a defendant may be able to enter a guilty plea in exchange for a lighter sentence. It is critical to work with an experienced defense attorney who can fight for the best possible outcome and provide guidance during the complex criminal justice process.
