4 reasons why teens use drugs

| Jun 13, 2018 | Uncategorized

When you get the call that your teenager is in trouble with the law, you feel anger, confusion and frustration. You may wonder why your son or daughter is experimenting with drugs. It is common to feel like you are a failure or that your teen is a bad kid.

The truth may not be either of those things, though. Teens are not just trying drugs because they are rebellious or you are a bad parent; there are some real reasons that adolescents get into trouble with drugs. Here are a few of the most common ones:

1. To bond with others

Some adolescents have difficulty making friends. When they attend parties or find social groups at school, they may find that a lot of other kids are using drugs. Some teens may start using drugs so they feel a sense of belonging. After all, no one wants to be an outcast.

2. To cope

Adolescence is often a time of many struggles and changes. While it is normal for teens to deal with mood swings, some have it harder than others. Some teenagers suffer from depression, stress or social anxiety. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, struggling teens may try drugs in an attempt to feel better.

3. Out of curiosity

Teenagers are coming into their own and experiencing the world in new ways. Sometimes, this natural sense of curiosity may lead to experimenting with illicit substances. Certain teenagers seek out experiences they see as dangerous or thrilling.

4. Peer pressure

Of course, peer pressure is a serious issue when it comes to teens trying drugs. Teens sometimes feel an intense pressure to fit in. Their peers may intimidate them into trying drugs, which may lead to trouble with the law.

If your teen is facing consequences for using drugs, it is important for you to understand why this is happening in the first place.
