Traffic safety a point of emphasis this holiday season

Through Jan. 2, police in Illinois will be taking part in a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. According to data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, 839 people were killed in drunk driving accidents in December 2018. Of those deaths, 285 occurred during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Authorities urge individuals who are planning on drinking alcohol to designate a driver or to use a ride sharing service to get home safely.

Individuals who notice that a friend or family member is impaired are encouraged to take that person's keys away. They are also encouraged to either drive that person home or arrange an alternate mode of transportation for an impaired individual. Those who see an impaired driver on the road should call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so.

As part of the ongoing traffic safety campaign, police officers throughout the state will be on the lookout for drivers who aren't wearing their seat belts. Therefore, motorists are encouraged to buckle up before leaving for their destination. Ideally, passengers will use them as well.

The use of marijuana will shortly become legal in Illinois. However, people who are charged with driving under the influence of marijuana or alcohol may face legal penalties. which may include jail time, a fine and a license suspension. Accordingly, motorists who have found themselves in this type of a situation might find it advisable to meet with a criminal defense attorney so that a strategy to counter the allegations can be constructed. In some cases, the negotiation of a favorable plea agreement might be a good option.
